Bicycle Quarterly is a magazine for avid cyclists, who enjoy their bikes, whether on a weekend ride, commuting, randonneuring, racing or touring the countryside. In Bicycle Quarterly, you
find professionally written articles about a variety of topics rarely covered in the "mainstream" cycling press (scroll down to read
all):

Full tests of today's best bikes: Our detailed evaluations are
based on weeks of riding in challenging terrain, not just a spin
around the neighborhood. We compare the ride, performance and handling of each trest bike to a reference bike to allow comparisons between bikes. We don't have biases and like good carbon fiber machines as much as great bikes built from steel (not to mention titanium and aluminum).
For every test bike, we tell you its good points and what could be improved, so you can decide for yourself whether it's a bike for you. (Unlike most magazines, Bicycle Quarterly is financed by subscribers, not advertisers, so we can be honest in our evaluations.)

Rides off the beaten path: San Francisco to Los Angeles in 1902, riding in the Alps in the 1930s, randonneuring today on classic bikes, or exploring forest roads in the Cascade Mountains with friends, our ride stories will inspire you to get on your bike. |
Technical issues that are relevant to everyday riding. Examples include: frame stiffness; rolling resistance of tires; frame geometry and its influence on bike handling; aerodynamics of fenders, bags and jackets; resistance of generator hubs; and What makes a good randonneur bike. We bring you cutting-edge research, presented in clear, well-written articles that do not require graduate coursework in engineering to understand. |
Beautiful bikes: From classics made by Cino Cinelli and René Herse to modern masterpieces by J. P. Weigle and Bruce Gordon, we show you the most beautiful bikes in great detail. In the "My Favorite Bike" column, we present a reader's favorite machine in each issue. See also our Image Archive with photos of the bikes presented in Bicycle Quarterly.

Detailed illustrations from the pen of the famous Daniel Rebour accompany many articles. For other articles, we commission drawings of modern bikes. These illustrations not only are beautiful, but they also provide a clearer view of the bikes than even the best photographs. |
We bring cycling history to life through interviews and period documents. We travel the world to talk to builders, riders and racers, and bring you riveting first-hand accounts. Our historic articles are well-researched, based on original sources. They are referenced to provide background and help with future research. See also our editorial standards. |
Expert advice on long-distance riding for randonneurs, century and event riders, bicycle tourists and all others interesting in riding further and faster. In our Randonneuring Basics series, you find out how to pack light, when to pedal and when to coast, and how to make your bike faster. |
We provide a forum for framebuilders,
constructeurs and expert mechanics, where these craftspeople present techniques,
ideas and projects in our Builders Speak series. Other columns include Projects, where expert mechanics show you step by step how to install fenders, how to overhaul a classic derailleur and even how to re-rake a fork to fine-tune your bike's handling.
